"PAINT A VULGAR PICTURE"

So, this is fun, if you will be so kind as to note the photo credit at the upper right. Remember the day I took that photo? I sure do! Oh, NOLA, I'll come visit you again soon. (Nobody freak, I'm not moving. I have much to do in Chicago for quite a while.)

"I WILL SEE YOU IN FAR OFF PLACES" VOL. II

Hey folks. I made it through Arkansas with the help of Jane's Addiction and Morrissey. I'm outside of Dallas now at another truckstop. This time, though, there is a television above my head instead of a speaker blaring country music, like the previous truckstop. Everyone sitting in the dining room is looking at the television, but it feels weird to see a bunch of strangers facing me as I sit below the television. Everyone is glued to the television to watch the really terrible weather coming through. Texas storms are incredible. Driving through storms is not my favorite. So, I'll check in with the blogosphere again once I get settled in my hotel in Austin. Close. Close. Close. If I can just outrun the storms a bit, all will be well.

I got a little shout-out on Austinist today about tomorrow's reading at Bookwoman. Really, if you are in Austin tomorrow, I'd love to see your smiling face. Really. Loooove it.

Anyway, I've taken some interesting photographs during my travels today. I made a stop in Hope, Arkansas (of course) because I tend to like my presidents a little bit wonky, I suppose.

"IN BETWEEN DAYS"

How do we feel about this? Look how cute they are.

Aw. Anyhoot. Last night was spectacular. Details on it in a bit. I got a lot of pics from last night that I want to share, so give me a little time to sort through them, then I'll give you pics and a full recap.

"GOLDEN LIGHTS"

So, I decided to stay another day. It's necessary. But, I have a gift for you. I'll bet you thought I was kidding when I said I actually wore my Dad's geezer shades, didn't you? Wrong-o. Behold my early morning coffee on the beach near the 'rents place.

What? They fit over my Rx glasses. Tell me that's not awesome.

"GLAMOUROUS GLUE"

Okay, the Guth-a-Go-Go elves have cooked up one mammoth of a contest this time. I mean, it's so ambitious that I'm almost hesitant to allow it, but the elves are really pushy, so there's really no sense fighting them anymore. Anyway, here goes. They write...

Ready for another contest? We thought you might be. So here it is, The "Friends In High Places" Contest. Here's the deal. You get your copy of Three Fallen Women into the hands of a famous, marginally famous or about-to-be-famous person and take a picture. That's it. The winner gets a little goodie basket from the Guth-a-Go-Go elves with all sorts of fun stuff like a t-shirt, stickers, a lapel pin and more and whatever projects the winner happens to be trying to promote, will get properly promoted on her blog. Now, bear in mind three things:

1) Fame is pretty iffy, so the contest will be graded on a curve. If the most famous person pictured holding Three Fallen Women ends up being a mayor of a town nobody has ever heard of except for the people who live there, so be it. That'll be the winner. Which leads to the next point...

2) The term "famous" is going to be judged by Ms. Guth and her inner circle of friends. So, bear in mind that while, say, Paris Hilton is more of a household name than, uh, David Lynch, Ms. Guth is a big David Lynch fan and therefore that entry is more likely to win. Quality and character count big in Guthtopia.

3) Your celebrity has got to be a willing participant. We don't want to hear any complaints from Ms. Famous-So-and-So's team of well-paid lawyers about how you stalked, threw books, blackmailed, etc. Everyone has a connection to someone, most people are pretty approachable and, for crying out loud, it's all in good fun.

So, once you have your pic, send it over by email. Enter as many times as you like. Don't let us stop you. If you have a lot of dirt on people or if a lot of people owe you favors, they should leap at the opportunity. All entries must be emailed by the last day of March. Winners will be announced on April 13th.
(I think it's cute how they expect me to announce the winner on my birthday. Pssh.)

So, you read it. Now go for it. Here is an excellent example. I took this one of Providence, RI's kick-ass improv team, Improv Jones.

I'd like to add that since the Guth-a-Go-Go elves don't specify any type of fame, that I'm open. Academic, social, artistic, scientific, political, legal, criminal, etc. Whatever. And you know, go easy on the PhotoShop, eh?

(Oh please, I know at least four of you who can enter the contest with a self-portrait and stand a pretty good chance of winning. Hello? This one is so easy.)

"ASK ME, UH-HO-HO, ASK ME"

So, this one is a little different. My friend sent me this in email form (she does not blog) but I thought it was too cool not to turn into a blog meme. Behold! I turned it into a meme!

The "ASK ME, UH-HO-HO, ASK ME" Meme

This is a chain interviewing meme. Here is how it goes... I'm going to answer the five questions my friend asked me. I don't tag you. You tag yourself. If you want to participate, leave "'Ask me, uh-ho-ho, ask me" in the comments section of this post and I'll then send you five questions that I am dying to ask of you. You post the questions and your answers to the questions on your blog. (You might want to include this explanation for clarity. Feel free to just link to this one instead of worrying about having to re-explain it, if that is easier.) When others comment on your blog asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions that you are dying to ask of them. Got it? Good.

Make sense? Okay, here are my answers to my friend's questions. Again, if you want participate, just comment with "Ask me, uh-ho-ho, ask me" and that's it.

1. Amy, how many different addresses have you had in your life?

Exactly twenty-one addresses, unless I am forgetting one, which I probably am.

2. Amy, why do you never show your teeth in pictures?

Oh, snap! Never say never.

3. Amy, do you want women to band together and beat up guys after they read your boook?

No! I think the most overlooked point in Three Fallen Women is that it isn't a call for women to blame men for anything, but to grow a set of ovaries and live strong, empowered lives by not making anymore stupid choices out of fear. It puts the onus on women to save themselves and each other from themselves and one another. Big difference. Huge.

4. Amy, what word or term do you want to see make a comeback?

Glad you asked! I want to start saying someone "is a kick" rather than "is awesome", etc. Swell is a good word, too. I don't mind swell. And, I'd like to see the word "fine" not be a snarky reply but an enthusiastic one again, as in, "Why sure, So-and-so is a real kick. I like her just fine."

5. Amy, your hair is so shiny! Do you buy good Shampoo or buy whatever is on sale? Will you always keep one shade or another of pink or will you ever branch out to other colors?

I don't fool around with cheap crap on my hair. I buy the good stuff. Ad for the other question, pssh, to those of you who knew me way back when, you know the answer is: "Amy Guth never met a haircolor she didn't try at least once." I just happen to really think the pinks and magentas and burgundies really suit me. I like them jsust fine.

"REEL AROUND THE FOUNTAIN (OR MULTI-RELIGION CHRISTMAS TREE)"

There is a little town square area not far from my apartment. I went by last night, noticed this and had to laugh.

"WHATEVER HAPPENS"

Well, it has been pretty Chanukah centric around here. I'm waiting for all of my bloggers to post for tonight's Chanuah Blog Tour and while waiting, I found this! My dearest Katie Schwartz has tagged me and who am I to ever turn her down for a meme? No way. Not me. Never.

Here goes. This one is asking for the contents of my desk. I have only one desk, since I work in my apartment. It's older and smaller than I'd like, but the perfect one hasn't found me yet. I got the chair from Katherine when she left for Mongolia. She warned me that it would piss me off, which it doesn't but it does make my back hurt sometimes even though it looks like a really swank office chair. I have a bamboo cup with "courage" written on it in Chinese (I'm told. It could say "jackass" and I wouldn't know.) filled with colored pencils, my good pens, good heavy scissors, a coaster that says "drink" across it, and a couple of chopsticks, in case my hair starts bugging me and needs to get swept back. I have a funky black lamp with an aqua shade, my black phone, a couple of checks I need to take to the bank, a little light blueish blotter thing to take the heat off the MacBook, the MacBook, my tan cherry blossom mug of green tea, a boxing Rabbi puppet for inspiration, usually my cat sleeps on my lap when I'm woking, other times, he flops his ass down on the side of my laptop and stars purrrrrring... and in the drawer... a pink highlighter, page flags, post-its, ink refills, bills to be paid, an xacto knife, a nail file, and a business card a stranger handed to me, presumably without realizing a number was jotted on the back. I somehow feel like the love of his life wrote her number on his card and he absent-mindedly handed it to me. I just haven't decided how to get the number back to him yet.

In other news, one of the two guys named Al that I know posted his answers to this meme, too. I stole this off of his blog. If this is a prioritized list, I am even more honored. Just below Jewish observance, just above masturbation. Story of my life.
