"THE GOOD PEOPLE"
This morning, I watched a video of Nick Vujicic, a man born without limbs, who has a really great outlook on life-- joking and playing with a drum machine as he spoke to a group of young people. I love the point he makes about getting up, literally and figuratively, and about hope and happiness. I'll admit that I sat here in my kitchen watching the video with teary eyes because I admire Vujicic's outlook so.
I've noticed something lately about hope and optimism and culture, our culture specifically. There is a incorrect connection, I think, between being honest about a given situation, and being perceived as happy. Unfortunate circumstances do not negate happiness, and at least in my worldview, a sad feeling doesn't eclipse hope or overall happiness.

Lord, this is so true. Have you ever heard the phrase "learned optimism"? I think there's a book by the same title. Your post reminded me of it.
Regarding the man in the video: have you ever heard of Johnny Eck? He's one of Hannah's favorite historical figures.
